Pine Crest Inn Centennial Celebration Opening Ceremony

The Opening Ceremony to kick off Pine Crest Inn's Centennial Celebration Year was held November 1, 2012.  The Pine Crest Inn was built in 1913 and opened its doors on November 1 of that year.

On Thursday, November 1, Pine Crest Inn began its 365 day countdown to its 100th birthday.

A ceremony celebrating that date was held at 6 pm at 50 Dogwood Road directly in front of the hotel.  It was a beautiful November evening, with moderate temperatures in the 50's.  Dogwood Road was closed off to automobile traffic and approximately 500 people attended this wondrous event!   Festivities began with a bagpipe procession that set the mood for the evening.  Drew Gross, Resident Manager, presided over the festivities.

Mrs. Emma C. Bliss, the original owner of Pine Crest Inn, made an appearance from the great beyond, and opened the ceremony with a little history of the beginnings of Pine Crest Inn and an incredible version of "America the Beautiful".

The Invocation was led by Reverend Edward J. Burch of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and then introductions of the current owners, Peter & Bobby Barrett and their families, as well as long time employees, were made.  Mayor Nancy Fiorillo welcomed the crowd and gave a Mayoral Proclamation from the Village of Pinehurst which was presented to the owners of Pine Crest Inn.   Audrey Moriarity, Executive Director of Tufts Archives, provided an informative overview of the special history of Pine Crest Inn.  Ron Green, Sr. , sports writer for The Charlotte Observer, engaged the audience with marvelous stories from over the years.

Donald J. Ross, owner of Pine Crest Inn from 1921 until he died in 1948, made a special appearance from "above" to regale the audience with his pride of owning such a special place in Pinehurst.   Emma Bliss returned to sing the Pine Crest Inn song which was written in tribute to its 100th birthday and sung to the tune of "Danny Boy".  The ceremony concluded with an incredible video tribute to Pine Crest Inn and its friends set to the music of "The Way We Were" and "You're Simply the Best".

Afterward, attendees enjoyed live music in the lobby, complimentary hors d'oeuvres, and $1.00 beer and wine (special price of 1 penny for every year).  Each attendee received a Pine Crest Inn Centennial Pin and a 12 page program filled with pictures and history of the last 100 years.

We thank everyone who attended this special evening in our history and look forward to seeing everyone here soon!
