The Pinehurst area has been the host to one of golf's most prestigious events, the US Open in 1999 and 2005 on Pinehurst #2. Additionally, the Women's US Open was held at Pine Needles just down the road in Southern Pines in 1996, 2001, and 2007. In 2014, an historic event will take place as Pinehurst will host both the Men's and the Women's US Open in back to back weeks at the famed Pinehurst #2, designed by Donald Ross in 1907.
